Im Tiefkeller des Albertinums befand sich bis Mai 1945 die Befehlsstelle der Örtlichen Luftschutzleitung, als deren Leiter der Dresdner Polizeipräsident fungierte. Die bombensicheren und mit den notwendigen technischen Ausstattungen versehenen Räume beherbergten gleichzeitig die Einsatzzentrale der Parallelorganisation der NSDAP. Für die Öffentlichkeit waren die Tiefkeller nicht zugänglich.
Von hier aus wurde am 13. Februar 1945, 21:39 Uhr, Fliegeralarm für Dresden ausgelöst. 22:03 Uhr erkannte die Luftschutzleitung, dass der Angriff Dresden galt; zwei Minuten später wurde dies der Bevölkerung per Drahtfunk mitgeteilt. 22:13 Uhr fielen die ersten Bomben auf das Stadtgebiet. Die Drahtfunkmeldung darüber blieb die letzte aus dem Albertinum; danach fielen die Telefonverbindungen dorthin fast vollständig aus.
Das Ausmaß der nächtlichen Katastrophe machte die Örtliche Luftschutzleitung so gut wie arbeitsunfähig. Eine Koordinierung der Hilfsmaßnahmen war von hier aus unmöglich geworden und wurde erst Tage später von den am Stadtrand gelegenen Ausweichbefehlsstellen aus versucht.
Until May 1945, the deep cellars of the Albertinum housed the Municipal Civil Air Defence Office, which was headed by Dresden’s chief of police. This bunker – bombproof and fitted with the necessary technical equipment – was also used in parallel as the Operational Headquarters of the National Socialist German Workers‘ Party (the Nazi party, NSDAP). The cellars were not accessible to the public.
This is the location where the air-raid warning for Dresden was set off on 13 February 1945, at 9.39 p.m. At 10.03 p.m., the Civil Air Defence Office realised that the attack was aimed at Dresden, and two minutes later this was communicated to the local population by wire radio. The first bombs fell on the city at 10.13 p.m. The wire radio announcement on this event was to be the last from here – telephone connections to the Albertinum then collapsed almost entirely.
The scale of the night’s catastrophe overwhelmed and virtually incapacitated the Civil Air Defence Office. It was no longer possible to coordinate rescue measures from there, and this was not attempted until days later from the reserve command posts located at the edge of the city.
